Located on a prominent town-centre site in Essex, the proposals at Rainsford Road adds a three-storey rear extension and upward extension to redevelop a mixed use building.
Playing with a balance between new and old, the design of the building is cut into two portions. The front section maintains a more traditional appearance using red brick and a pitched roof. The design slots in with the surrounding streetscape and sensitively responding to the adjacent Grade II listed building.
In contrast, the back portion takes on a completely contemporary approach. Nodding to the white-painted brick used on the listed building at the back of the site, a triangulated white metal cladding envelopes the rear section of the building. Large floor to ceiling windows are incorporated to allow natural light into the building while framing views of the listed property.
The scheme adds a further two ground floor commercial units and eight residential units and has been submitted for planning approval to Chelmsford City Council.
