Nestled on a backland plot in Maida Vale, John Stuart House will see the development of two, two-storey mews-style properties.
Working with our client to establish a project brief, a mews-style typology was explored given the constrained nature of the site created by the surrounding urban context. The design opts for a linear, terraced formation while also taking reference from the main building facing Edgware Road to determine an appropriate scale, massing and materiality.
Adding a contemporary feel to the proposal, the properties feature brick detailing paired with large glazing that flood the houses and internal courtyards with natural light. The southern elevation plays with fenestration and perforated brick walls to activate a mews-style street scene.
The project required a sensitive approach that avoids issues of overlooking with the neighbouring buildings, while still achieving a design that is crafted to provide well-proportioned homes for the local area.
Planning permission was received in June 2023 from Westminster Council and work is beginning on site.
